I am looking for a cutter, but not sure of the size. I am new at this. I do rug hooking. So if it cuts the thin strips I need to do my rugs with then this is what I need.

    • larry says:

      Hi Judy,

Thank you for inquiring about a rug fabric cutting machine. We retail new Fraser 500-1 machines that cut from size 2 through size 10 (1/16th” through 1/2″). We also sell our own Ault’s Wool Fabric Cutting machine that uses drop-in, lift out cutter cartridges. It is a very simplistic machine that requires no adjusting or wrenches. The Fraser has pressure and alignment adjustments as well as a wrench used to remove the cutter heads each time you change cutter heads.

    • larry says:

      Hi Judy,

I hit a key accidently and sent you a reply. Hope it did not have too many typos. Any way, I was not done with the reply. The Fraser 500-1 machine retails most places for $340.00. We did not increase our price the last time Fraser increased prices so our price is $294.95 plus shipping (price increase probably coming up soon for us). Additional cutter heads are $34.95 each.

Our Ault machine is $399.95 plus shipping with a cutter head of your size choice. Additional cutter heads are $124.95. Fraser cutter heads eventually need to be re-sharpened and the Ault cartridges should never need to be sharpened. I am currently out of size 4 cutter heads for the Ault machine. Expect to be able to ship back orders in about 6-8 weeks. ( I hate having to rely on a local machining company to produce parts but we are not set up to machine the parts. BTW, our machine is all USA made.

      Sincerely,
      Larry Ault

  2. Shauna says:

    Hi Larry
With regards to your 2 Sep 2011 post about two Rigby cutting machines. Would you by any chance still have one of them and which Model it is, H, D or C?
Also, for your Ault cutters, is the expected waiting list delivery still for Fall 2012?

    Thank you,
    Shauna

    • larry says:

      Hi Shauna,

Thank you for visiting our blog spot. The two Rigby machines I mentioned are gone but I do have a rather old Rigby Model H here in the store. It is not the current model but works fine. It has a size 6 used cutter head on it. I will be glad to price it to you if you are interested in a machine that works but is not fancy.

Regarding our Ault’s Wool Fabric Cutting machine, they are in stock and ready to ship today. I currently do not have the size 4 cartridge but expect them to be back in stock in about a month. All of our other sizes from 5 through 10, including 8.5 and 9.5 are in stock and ready to ship. Our price on a new Ault’s machine with one drop-in, lift-out cutter head is $399.95 plus $20.00 shipping. Additional cutter heads are $124.95.

Hope to hear back from you. Please send an email reply to larry.ault@gmail.com if you are interested in pricing the used Rigby machine.

    • larry says:

      Hi Cathe,

  4. Hope says:

    Hi there,
I am just wondering if you have any good used cutters available….fraser or your Ault’s….I’m just starting out and would like to have a good cutter that I do not have to upgrade as I get more into it.
Thanks so much! have a great day!!

    Hope
PS…can’t seem to find a picture of the Ault cutters…

    • larry says:

      Hi Hope,

We frequently have used Fraser or Rigby machines that we have taken in on trade. I currently have a really old Rigby Model H for $75.00 but I think you want a machine that can last you a really long time. This Rigby is a starter only machine and that is great for those who are not sure if rug hooking is really going to be their thing.

I am expecting to see a couple of used machines here in the store soon. Also, we are vending at a show in Saline ( Ann Arbor) Michigan on April 28th, 2012 and there may be a good used machine come in from that show.

Sorry I cannot say I have a used Ault machine for you. Ault and Townsend BeeLine machines are too new for anyone else to make something better. I may have a demonstrator Ault machine coming back in the next few weeks. I might be able to cut you a deal on it. I need to see its condition when it gets back here in the store.

I’ll get back to you when I have a machine that I think will need your needs.

      Sincerely,
      Larry Ault

    Hi Larry,
I just came back from the Sheep and Wool Show in New York and it was great! I took a class in Rug Hooking and fell in love. Unfortunately, I can’s seem to find anyone in the New York area who sells supplies. Would you happen to know of any and can you recommed a good, but cheap cutter to purchase? Used would be fine.
    Thanks,
    Ro

    • larry says:

      HI RO,

Glad to hear from you about rug hooking supplies. We sell everything a rug hooker needs to get started or to advance their wool stash and equipment supply. I do have a very nice used Fraser 500-1 cutter for $195.00. It is just like new and I will ship it to you with the cutter head size of your choice. New retails for over $300.00 most places. We ship all over the world and will be delighted if you start your equipment search with Ault’s.

p.s. I also have a nice used Fraser 500. It does not have all of the features of the 500-1 but it will certainly get you going and should last for years. The price on this Fraser is $135.00. Either model will ship by US Priority mail for $15.00.

  6. Rosemary Magee says:

Looking for a used rug hooking cutter. As a person new at rug hooking I so not want to spend a lot for a new one til I see if I like rug hooking.

    • larry says:

      Hi Rosemary,

Thank you for checking in with us about a used wool fabric cutting machine. I currently have a used Fraser 500 model in stock. It is quite similar to the Fraser 500-1 and the end result, strips ready to hook, is the same. The 500-1 has more bells and whistles but new it costs over $300.00.

The used 500 I have is priced here in the store for $135.00 and it has a size 4 cutter head installed. We sell all the sizes of cutter heads that the Fraser Company makes. New ones are $34.95. Sometimes I have used cutter heads for $24.95. Currently my used sizes are from No.5 and down. No larger used sizes in stock right now, just new.

Hope to see a reply from you soon. Or call my cell at 419-347-9957.

  8. Lillian Krueger says:

Larry….I am new to rug hooking and have just found your site. I would be interested in a used wool cutter in ‘next to new’ condition which cuts #6 width. I have just purchased two kits with wool cut so am not in a great rush, but am serious about purchasing a cutter. I have read that the Beeline was the best, do you have an opinion about this? I am looking forward to hearing from you. Also, a picture would be helpful. lillian

    • larry says:

      Hi Lillian,

Thank you for contacting us here at Ault’s Rug Hooking Store. Recently I have had several requests for used Fraser or Rigby machines. I will place your email address on my “wanted” list and when your name comes up I will contact you with the details of a used fabric cutter. The Townsend/Beeline machine is great. Our machine is also. You can see our machine photo and info at http://www.aults.com . The cutter heads we make fit both our machine and the Townsend. Our machine is a little less costly and gets the same results (nicely cut strips). Hope to hear back from you again.

      Sincerely,
      Larry

  9. Sue Morin says:

I am in the process of purchasing a new Ault rug cutter from Toni in Maine. I have ordered the #4 and #6 cartridge and would really like to be able to use a #3 in it. Would a Townshend/Beeline #3 cartridge work in your cutter?

    Thanks for your help

  10. Maureen Olsen says:

I am also interested in a used Townsend cutter. Please let me know if you have any. Is there somewhere on the web to find strip widths with cutter numbers? I would be interested in cutting multiple strips in one swipe. Is this possible? Thank you.

    • larry says:

      Hi Maureen,

Thanks for inquiring about wool fabric cutting machines. The majority of sizes of cutter heads made in the USA base the cutter size on 32nd’s of an inch. This is pretty common on sizes 2-8. (2=2/32 inch, 3=3/32inch 4=4/32 or 1/8 inch, 6=6/32 or 3/16 inch and 8=8/32 or 1/4 inch. Over size 8 it gets a little crazy. There is an 8.5 and 9.5 but those are still based on 32nd’s of an inch. One company makes a 3/8″ cutter and most size 10 cutters are 1/2 inch)
I do not currently have a used Townsend machine in stock. I do have a Townsend size 10 cutter head that came with a trade. It is slightly used, cuts like new and is available here in the store for $115, including shipping to Continental USA addresses. This is a steep price reduction from the new Townsend size 10. I believe new they currently sell for about $150.00.

We make our own Ault Wool Fabric Cutting machine It retails for $449.00 plus $20.00 shipping (Continental USA) and comes with one cutter head size of your selection. We sell sizes 4-10, including half sizes for the 8 and 9 and they retail new for $144.95. I have an early version Ault machine for $50.00 off. It is the same machine we currently sell but it was in our first batch of machines and the surface is shiny, but not as fine a finish as our current machines. If you might be interested in this slightly used Ault machine, please call me at 419-347-9957. The only use the machine has had is that I use it to test cutting accuracy and setup of the cutter heads we assemble and sell.

Hope this info helps you make a decision about fabric cutting machines. I caution you on purchasing a used machine from places like Ebay unless you can absolutely return them for full purchase price. Sometimes these machines are advertised like “from an estate sale–we think it cuts wool for hooked rugs” Some of these machines cost more to get working right that they are worth. Not saying they are all junk, but be CAUTIOUS.

      Sincerely,
      Larry Ault

  11. Janice Bedwell says:

Is there any used wool cutter that would allow me to adjust it so I could cut different widths of wool? The person set up to teach me closed her shop! I am new to this as you can tell, but I have cut some wool with scissors and hooked practice small designs with success. I want a decent cutter. I don’t care if it takes a long time to cut the wool; I’m patient. Also, is there anywhere you know of that I could order cut wool? THANKS! Jan

  12. Sandra McC says:

Are the units that are used refurbished or put in highest possible condition prior to selling as used and tested? I got a Rigby used and well it is not everything I thought. Frasier vs Bliss, guess both are interchangeable cutting heads but is there any “quality” difference” that a newbie may not be aware of? Not ready to fully commit to your cutter in the mean time I do need something worth of investing. Is the old Rigby of any trade in? Happy Turkey day after!

  13. Scott Hanson says:

I am looking for a quick and efficient way to cut 4″ strips of coat-weight wool fabric. The easier, faster, and higher quantity the better. Any ideas?

    Thanks. Merry Christmas!

    Scott

    • larry says:

      Hi Scott,

I am not aware of any rug hooking equipment that can cut wider than about 2 inches wide. Have you tried JoAnn’s Fabric Store. They carry what I call a rolling cutter that can be run along the side of a straight edge to cut fabric. You could probably apply enough pressure to cut coat-weight . Of course, there are scissors but it sounds like you are past there already.

  14. Jennifer says:

Hi , I was recently gifted a Beeline cutter. My husband purchased a fraser model for me several years ago along with cutter blades #s 6 7 8 9 and 10. I used #9 the most and have never used 6 7 or 8, and 10 once. I am interested in getting rid of them since I no longer use them. I have to offer my sister -in- law first option but if she is not interested are you? Do you buy or only trade? Thank you, Jennifer Freeman

  15. Margie says:

I too am just beginning to hook rugs with wool and canvases left to me by my mother. I am in need of a cutter if thin strips of wool. Do you still any used cutters available ? Since I live in Georgia I would be glad to pay shipping. Thank you.

    Hello,

I am looking for a used wool cutter to purchase. Do you have any in stock and if so what are the cutter details and, of course, the price? I live in Canada but have access to a New York state mailing address if sending packages outside the U.S. is a problem.

I look forward to hearing from you.

  18. Linda bruneau says:

Hi there…can you tell me what you have available right now in used cutters? Thank you!

  19. Caroline Levin says:

    Larry,
Can you give me a brief education on the “special” cutter blades with the rubber rings? Are they best used for certain types of fabrics and bad for others?
Thanks for your time and help,
    Caroline

    • larry says:

The Fraser machines use regular and special cutter heads. The special is usually on the larger sizes to help provide traction when cutting the wool

  20. Becky says:

What cutter would you recommend for suit weight to coat weight wool for up to 2″ wide strips for a braided rug? Where is the info about your Ault cutter?

    • larry says:

I am suggesting you consider a Fraser 500-1 machine with a No.1 cutter head. I have a used one that will meet your needs. Our Ault machine is not intended for your kind of cutting to make braided rugs. You can see it on our web site at http://www.aults.com .

      Hello MJ,

YES, I have some used woolfabric cutting machines that will help you get started without breaking the bank on an expensive machine. Here are the details.

1.) Rigby Model D–Has two cutter heads on the same shaft so switching from one cutter head to another is very simple and requires no tools. I currently have two in stock that I have lubricated, adjusted and cleaned. Both of these machines are in very nice condition and work just like new. Both of these machines have brand new #6 and #8 cutter heads installed. I have them priced at $275 each plus $15.00 for Priority Flat Rate US mail shipping. This is the time of year that used machines are popular so please don’t wait too long if you want one of them.

2.) Rigby Model H– Red and Green version- $175.00 plus $15.00 shipping by US Priority. You can choose from a brand new # 6 or #8 cutter head. If you want both cutter heads, the second one will be an additional $59.95. I have also prepped this machine to cut like new.

3.) Rigby Model H–current machine version- Same as number 2 above, priced at $275.00 plus shipping. This machine has the current tension adjusting knob that is a little easier to use.

Hope to hear back from you again soon. I can send photos if that will help you decide which machine to order.

      Thank you for inquiring!!

I can no longer knit or crochet due to having strokes earlier this year. I can do wool rug hooking though. Being on Social Security, any investment I make must be what I need for rug making for a long time. I am practicing on a simple lap frame while I am waiting on my stand-up frame to arrive in the next few weeks. Would you please suggest an easy to operate and reliable wool cutter using #6 and # 8 for me? And can you tell me how long it would take to get one?
Thank you so very much for your extra efforts.
